Course Information

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The classes will typically include lectures followed by mini discussions in class. The background reading at home will be discussed through students’ reading presentations.

Course content

This introductory course is aimed at providing some general information about the nature of the English language and its most basic components. The course will look at how sounds are produced, how words and sentences are built and try to outline all the rules that govern these processes.

Teaching objective

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - demonstrate knowledge of linguistic notions linked to the course topics; - demonstrate a competence in discussing, evaluating and independently analyzing the covered linguistic phenomena; and - demonstrate a better knowledge of the general global picture of the field of English linguistics.

Prior knowledge expected

Students should have passed the STEOP courses (or Introduction to English Studies)

1. Reading Presentation: 10 minutes based on 1-2 page summary; 2. Midterm Exam: the first half of the curriculum (must be taken);and 3. Final Exam: the second half of the curriculum (must be taken)
