Course Information

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Teaching will be highly interactive and task-based, with much discussion and opportunity for questions. Feedback on assignments is individual and comprehensive, as well as general to the whole group.

Conditions of admission

A number of assignments throughout the course and a final essay under examination conditions.

Course content

This course provides an opportunity for students to practise and develop their academic writing skills in English.

Topics

  • Doing research for academic assignments: deciding what material is appropriate and making useful notes.
  • Avoiding plagiarism: paraphrasing; introducing and using quotations; compiling a bibliography
  • Organising your writing: using mind-mapping to plan and structure your essay; connecting th eparts of an essay using transitions
  • Conventions of academic style: using cautious language and semi-formal vocabulary
  • Improving English usage and punctuation
  • Writing for impact: showing the importance or relevance of your argument; making clear claims; responding to what others have said; answering opposing views
  • Effective revision and editing.

Teaching objective

Students' writing should become more academic in style, and show greater precision, grammatical accuracy, coherence, cohesion and clarity. Sources should be used correctly and appropriately.
