Course content

Session 1:Imperatives and substance of inter-cultural competences Session 2:Cultural patterns, identity and communication: Focus on CEE/SEE Session 3:Defining Central/Eastern Europe: 'Borderlands' as a historical metaphor Session 4:Politics and economy: Legacies and realities Session 5: Cultural distinctions, perceptions and imagination(s) of CEE/SEE

Teaching objective

Skills essential for successful inter-cultural communication are based on understanding the multiple dimensions of one's cultural identity, with the special emphasis on cultural values specific to a particular ethnic, or social group, region, etc. Once developed, the 'deep' understanding of the context(s) of communication can be useful in managing a range of 'challenging' inter-cultural situations. This competence is of special importance in regions/societies characterized by a high level of diversity, or those with a history of various disputes. Therefore, this course will provide increased understanding of the relationship between culture and communicative practices in the business environment. Its objective is also to describe the role of cultural patterns and discourses relevant for successful communication with actors in the business environment of South East/Central & Eastern Europe (SEE/CEE), with the special focus on countries belonging to the wider Alps-Adriatic region. Finally, this course will contribute to the participants' competences related to identifying and removing obstacles to successful inter-cultural communication in the SEE/CEE business environment.
