Lecture, discussions, in-class tasks, group work, presentations

Inhalt/e

Building on knowledge gained in Introduction to Linguistics, this course focuses on two important areas that help us to better understand the structure and grammar of English: syntax which is basically concerned with the formation and structure of sentences and morphology which deals with the formation and structure of words. In this course we will expand our knowledge in both areas, and we will be able to gain insight into different linguistic approaches to analyzing English syntactically and morphologically. In addition, space is provided for the individual exploration of a research topic in these areas.

  • From words to sentences
  • The structure of sentences – basics of generative grammar
  • The functions of sentences – basics of functional grammar
