Course content

The class introduces students to practical aspects of teaching English in the classroom and provides guidance in classroom observation and in preparing, teaching and analysing lessons.

  • Steps in planning a lesson
  • Using the textbook creatively
  • Classroom language, giving instructions and explanations, eliciting language
  • Preparing and using worksheets & visual aids
  • Characteristics of good practice activities
  • Meaningful homework assignments
  • The why, hows amd whens of explicit grammar teaching
  • Classroom interaction
  • Dealing with heterogeneous classes
  • Using the computer and the WWW in language teaching
  • Giving feedback to learners, learner assessment
  • Evaluating a lesson, eliciting feedback

Teaching objective

The class should make future teachers of English aware of their choices when preparing and teaching lessons. It will provide opportunities to plan, discuss and try out ideas for the classroom. The class also provides a forum for reflections on the students' first English teaching experiences in a large(r) group.

Knowledge from "Introduction to English Teaching Methodology. Already signed up for your teaching practice (Schulpraktikum)
