You should have completed Introduction to English Studies and Introduction to Linguistics

Course content

Discussion of the most important morphological and syntactic processes in English. The areas covered will include affixation and other forms of word-building in English, and a descriptive analysis of English sentence, clause and phrase structure.

Topics

  • The units of morphology: word - morph, morpheme, allomorphs
  • Identification of morphemes
  • Inflection versus word formation
  • The nature of morphemes
  • Lexicalization processes and productivity restrictions
  • Morphology and its relation to syntax
  • Clause types
  • Formal and functional categories in clauses
  • The structure of phrases
  • Specification, modification, complementation
  • Clausal processes
  • Descriptive syntax vs. theories of syntax

Teaching objective

To deepen awareness of morphological and syntactic processes in English

Prior knowledge expected

Knowledge from the introductory courses in English linguistics - if you haven't attended them, this course will not make sense, and it's not a good idea to do the introductory courses and this one in parallel either!
