Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The creation of devices that can sense the environment and transmit the sensed information wirelessly gave rise to many commercial, scientific, and industrial applications. Wireless Sensor Networks is a continuously evolving field as we move towards Industry 4.0 and intelligent automation.

This course is intended to bridge the gap between theory and practice and provide the students with the opportunity to obtain "hands-on" experience on core concepts and technologies in the field of Wireless Sensor Networks.

The Sensor Networks course is an introduction to wireless sensor networks in which the students are going to work on the following:

Hard skills:

  • Programming of micro-controllers (i.e., developing, debugging, conducting experiments, simulating, sensing)
  • Algorithms
  • Synchronization
  • Wireless Communication

Soft-skills:

  • Problem-solving
  • Troubleshooting
  • Independence
  • Planning
  • Meeting deadlines

Teaching methodology

During the academic semester the students are called to work individually or in group of two on the given assignments under the supervision and guidance of the instructor.

In group work, both students have to fulfill all the requirements of each assignment.

Course content

Course Overview

The academic semester is divided into four periods in which the students have to complete four assignments in total. At the beginning of every period, a new assignment will be presented. By the end of the period, the students must hand in an assignment report and their implementations.

The assignments are designed in a "built-up fashion", in a sense that, implementations from previous assignments are essential for later ones.

At the end of the fourth period, an individual oral examination/discussion is to take place.

Note! The students are going to be given all the required hardware needed by the assignments.

Assignments:

  • Basics of Sensors nodes
  • Networking
  • Synchronization
  • Small project

Hardware:

  • Micro-controller: Waspmote 1.5V of Libelium
  • RF-module: xBee s1 Pro
  • Misc.: 3.7v, 18650 battery pack, antenna, cable-ware

Prior knowledge expected

  • Core concepts of Wireless Sensor Networks
  • Main programming language to be used is C/C++ (Identical to the programming language used for the programming of the Arduino Boards).  Basic knowledge in Python would be a plus.
  • Fundamentals in electronics and embedded systems.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

  • Assignment reports,
  • Closing assignment presentation

Examination topic(s)

  • Project results
  • Concepts of Wireless Sensor Networks

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The final grade consists of: Assignment reports, final presentation, oral examination/ discussion.

The course grades are divided into four (4) components. The detailed grading for this course is as follows:

1. Assignment 1 ……………....…… 25%

2. Assignment 2 ……………....…… 25%

3. Assignment 3 ……………....…… 25%

4. Final project report submission + Presentation………………......…… 25%

- Please note that all asignments are build on the previous assignment, thus follwoing all is mandatory.

- Assignments 1-3 will only be graded based on the reports.

- Each assignment will be graded out of 10, and a minimum score of 5 is required to pass.

- Failure to submit the final project report  is a fail.

Final Presentation: 23.06.2025   |   Report Submission: 30.06.2025
