Inhalt/e
The diversity of Englishes around the world is in part characterized by languages that have emerged from the contact of non-English and English speakers, having to find a common means of conversation in restricted contexts (e.g. trade). What usually started as a restricted code for limited conversational functions (Pidgin) frequently turned into a fully-fledged language (Creole) that combines features from English and other languages. According to Seargeant and Swann (2012), more than 40 English-based Pidgin and Creole languages are used to varying extents around the world. This seminar will provide insight into the general processes that led to the creation and development of English-based Pidgin and Creole languages, will explore examples of such Pidgins and Creoles and will give participants the opportunity to research aspects of individual Pidgins and Creoles in line with their own interests.
