LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

This course is aimed at building awareness of the political, linguistics, and socio-cultural issues involved in language policy, with a special focus on English as used globally. Upon completing the course, you are supposed to be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge related to basic aspects of language policy (such as standards and norms);

- demonstrate knowledge related to English as a lingua franca;

- demonstrate knowledge of different approaches to teaching and using English today internationally; and

- demonstrate a practical competence to address the relevant issues in the classroom. 

Lehrmethodik

The classes will typically include lectures followed by mini discussions and practical assignments in class.

Inhalt/e

  • Introduction to language varieties
  • Major aspects of society-langauge interaction: multilingualism, prescriptivism, languages in contact, and more
  • English as a lingua franca
  • Norms and standards of English
  • Teaching and using English in 2020s and beyond

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Practical Task: 20 pts. Class presentations: 30 pts. Seminar papers: 50 pts. Total 100 pts.

Prüfungsinhalt/e

1. Practical Task: a pilot analysis based on one identified problem related to use of English as a lingua franca; (must)

2. Class presentation: a presentation of an approach meant to address the problem tackled in your practical task; and (must)

3. Seminar paper: a wider discussion of the future of English language use, from different angles. (must)

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Practical tasks and class presentation need to be completed during the course, as a prerequisite for the seminar paper submitted later on.
