Intendierte Lernergebnisse
This course provides an opportunity for students to practice and develop their academic writing skills in English in multiple genres. Some of the topics that will be covered are the structure, organization, and analysis of academic and professional texts and the issue of plagiarism.
Lehrmethodik
Students will be instructed on various aspects of academic writing and conducting research by the instructors through lectures and PPTs that will be supplemented by Moodle activities. Self- and peer-reflection/assessment forms an integral aspect of how students are expected to improve their language competency in writing skills. Extensive in-class and at-home writing and reading are expected of students.
Students are expected to avail themselves of (1) tutorial options provided by the SchreibCenter and the course tutor and (2) materials available on Moodle.
Inhalt/e
The topics in this course may include but are not limited to:
- conducting research and collating information;
- organizing writing and producing academic/professional texts;
- analyzing texts in terms of language (spec. lexis, grammar, and structure);
- using quotations appropriately;
- avoiding plagiarism;
- self- and peer-review/feedback; and
- conventions of academic style.
Students will be asked to formulate their own opinions regarding texts covered in class in order to show evidence of critical thinking and expert processing of formal texts.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
See curriculum for which skills students should have acquired in the previous writing courses. Generally speaking, students should
- be confident in writing coherent paragraphs;
- know how to write an essay;
- understand the basics of citing academic literature; and
- understand the basics of using a style guide (Chicago Manual of Style/CMOS).
Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen
B.A. students (612) must have completed "English for Academic Purposes" and "Advanced Language Productive and Receptive Skills".
“Lehramt”/UF/B.Ed. students (407) must have completed the modules ENA, ENB, ENC and END.

Prüfungsinformationen
Prüfungsmethode/n
In this course students will be assessed in the following ways:
- continuous assessment in the form of self-, peer-, and instructor-generated feedback;
- various academic and professional texts representing multiple genres; and
- a written examination.
Prüfungsinhalt/e
Advanced language competences related to writing (See CEFR for more specifics) including but not limited to an advanced lexical and syntactic range and rhetorical strategies relating to argumentation.
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
The grading for this course will be based on:
- a timed, in-class written examination and
- several writing assignments.
Students will be provided with a detailed rubric that lays out the assessment criteria for written assignments.
