Intendierte Lernergebnisse
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Write a formal academic paragraph
- Confidently use complex sentences in their writing
- Actively and accurately use a range of academic vocabulary and phrases in their writing
- Cite and reference sources appropriately
- Participate in discussions freely and openly
Lehrmethodik
In- and out-of-class tasks and exercises, extensive self-study, writing assignments.
Students are required to regularly read academic texts in English to develop their academic reading skills and awareness of academic vocabulary and register.
Students will be assigned multiple written tasks, each of which may include multiple drafts.
The course will be conducted entirely in English.
Inhalt/e
This course covers the following:
- Paragraph and essay structure
- Features of formal academic writing (including organization, vocabulary, grammar, and rhetoric)
- Basic academic reading skills
- Conducting a literature search
- Scholarly practice: understanding and avoiding plagiarism
- Citing and referencing (paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting) using APA
- Introduction to online tools such as corpora and the academic phrasebank
- The writing process
ATTENTION: after an initial diagnostic writing task, some (or all) students will be required to attend sessions with a Writing Center tutor to fulfil the requirements of this course.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Strong English language ability (B1+ to B2 level).
Literatur
Recommended reading will be given throughout the semester.

Prüfungsmethode/n
Semester grade will be based upon student's writing portfolio, engagement and interaction in class (throughout the semester), in- and out-of-class work throughout the semester, and a final in-class writing task.
