Anmerkungen

Attendance is mandatory and will be checked in the practice sessions (for legal reasons). You may miss a maximum of two practice sessions. However, note that being absent will reduce the number of exercises you can tick in the checklists. As from the third time missing, you need to bring a doctor’s certificate and give an oral presentation of your (uploaded) solutions to the exercises of that session at a separate meeting. Repeated absence or abortion of the course without excuse/deregistration will result in negative grading. Opting out of the course without negative grading is possible until April 28, 2024, at the latest.

LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The key learning objective is to provide students with a basic understanding of the key determinants of economic developments (in particular business cycles). We, therefore, commence with developing an understanding of terminology, concepts, and important economic relationships. Based on this, we discuss stylized models that describe economic activity in an open economy over the short, medium, and long run and economic policy options.

Lehrmethodik

VC International Macroeconomics consists of two parts:

Based on the underlying textbook, the lectures develop basic knowledge about and understanding of important macroeconomic relationships.

The practice sessions in small groups discussing identical material deepen the knowledge obtained in the lectures by discussing pencil and paper, and computer exercises.

  1. The Facts of Growth
  2. Saving, Capital Accumulation, and Output

  4. The Challenges of Growth

  7. Expectations, Output, and Policy
  8. Openness in Goods and Financial Markets
  9. The Goods Market in an Open Economy

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

You will have to solve the four exercises of the corresponding exercise sheet for the practice sessions as of the first session. Select (tick) the exercises you solved in the Campus System checklist and upload the solutions to Moodle by 16:00 on the Monday before the practice session.

During the practice sessions, you will be randomly asked to present your solution for any of the exercises you ticked. You are expected to give a short and succinct presentation of your solutions.

A necessary condition for successfully completing the practice sessions is to tick at least 60% of the exercises (= 12 out of 20). Every ticked exercise is worth 1 point – the maximum number of points achievable for ticked exercises is, therefore, 20 points. You need at least 10 points from the number of selected/ticked exercises, taking into account bonus and malus points that you may have collected over the semester.

If it turns out that you are absent (without excuse) or haven’t prepared the exercise, you may be penalized with up to 2.5 minus points. In addition, you will lose the point for the exercise you ticked in the list (or all if you are absent). Serious flaws in the solutions presented will lead to deductions. You may, however, also be awarded bonus points for particularly good explanations of exercises and contributions (to the discussions).

Final exam:

  • The final exam consists of three questions:
    • Exercise 1 [20 points]: 20 true/false statements worth 1 point each
    • Exercises 2–3 [20 points]: Exercises and questions similar in spirit and complexity to the weekly exercises
  • A minimum of 20 points is required for a positive grade
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Closed-book exam (= no documents allowed); you may use a non-programmable calculator (and bringing a ruler is also a good idea)

Prüfungsinhalt/e

The exam is based on:

  • the actual contents discussed in the lectures (the list above is, therefore, purely indicative)
  • the material discussed in the practice sessions, both related to the exercise sheets and to potentially discussed further issues.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

You must complete each part (i.e., achieve at least 10 points in the practice sessions and at least 20 points in the final exam). Note that taking the final exam is conditional upon completing the practice sessions successfully.

The final exam contributes 2/3 and practice sessions 1/3 to the overall grade.

If one of the two parts is not completed successfully, International Macroeconomics VC must be repeated. [This is required by law and not for us to decide.]
