What is literary and cultural theory and why do we need it? What are the forms and functions of the various ‘isms’, ‘turns’ and ‘posts’? Engaging critically with these questions, this course offers an introduction to some of the most important approaches, methods and terms in contemporary literary and cultural theory. We will trace their historical development and influence from the 19th century to the present day and discuss their relevance and potential application for different reading, teaching, and research contexts.

Approaches will include: New Criticism, Formalism, Structuralism/Poststructuralism, Psychoanalytical Theory, Postmodernism, New Historicism, Reader Response and Empirical Approaches, Feminism, Gender and Queer Theory, Cultural Studies, Postcolonial Criticism, Posthumanism, Ecocriticism and Human-Animal Studies.
