Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • identify key events in the history of the British Isles with a particular focus on peace- and war-times in the Middle Ages;
  • define (and exemplify) subject-specific terminology, especially as it relates to peace and war;
  • read and understand basic texts from the Old and Middle English periods (as necessary, in translation; other texts may be examined as well: Anglo-Norse, Scots, Anglo-Norman) that have a connection to peace and war;
  • examine the social, historical, religious, linguistic, and cultural elements relating to peace and war and explain their significance; and
  • identify literary and cultural artifacts that are important to the history of peace and war in the British Isles.

Teaching methodology

Students will receive instructor-input, guided activities, and peer-generated mini-lectures on topics related to the course.

Course content

In this course the following topics will be discussed:

  • outline of British/English history with particular focus on military conflicts;
  • (as needed) brief introduction to Old/Middle English and Latin with focus on:
    •  terminology related to peace- and warcraft;
    •  analysis of excerpts of important texts (optional translation tasks may form part of class-work but translated versions of texts will be provided for students to read for homework);
  • introduction to material culture, specifically related to elements of peace- and warcraft; and
  • the depiction of historical events in texts and art with a focus on the depiction of peace and war.

Prior knowledge expected

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of cultural studies as covered in the introductory lectures that are prerequisites for this course. Students’ interests may also be taken into account when deciding on which particular topics to address in their assignments for the course. See Moodle for details on these assignments. Students do not need to know Old/Middle English or Latin for this course; translations will be provided and students will be aided by the instructor in an analysis of the original text.

Curricular registration requirements

For the BA in Anglistik und Amerikanistik, this course belongs to the Pflichtfächer in Fachliches Grundstudium Culture and requires students to have passed either British Culture: History and Society or American Culture: History and Society. In exceptional circumstances, admission to the course may be granted at the discretion of the instructor even if the aforementioned prerequisite have not been met.

Literature

All materials will be made available digitally on Moodle. It is important that students have access to these for in-class discussions, and they are indispensable for the work that will be done in the course. The instructor will provide supplementary material as requested/needed.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

1.INFORMATIONAL POSTER (40%)

Students will produce an informational, creative poster on a particular event or important element (e.g., a particular development in weaponry) in the peace-time/war-time history of the British isles. A sample template will be shared with students along with specific instructions about word count and content. Posters will be graded according to a rubric available on Moodle. Depending on time and availability, posters may be placed in the department for others to view.

2.FINAL WRITTEN EXAMINATION (60%)

A cumulative written exam will take place at the end of term (see Moodle schedule for date). Specifics as to the content and format of the exam will be shared in the course.
