Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of linguistic notions linked to the course topics;
- demonstrate a competence in discussing, evaluating and independently analyzing the covered linguistic phenomena; and
- demonstrate a better knowledge of the general picture and the application of English grammar.
Lehrmethodik
The classes will typically include lectures followed by mini discussions and application in class.
Students are also required do apply their knowledge at home.

Definition of grammar
Formal criteria for identifying parts of speech
Detailed description of syntactic categories
Structure of phrases and sentences
Functional and lexical elements of grammar
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Students should have completed the two introductory courses in linguistics - Introduction to Linguistics 1 and Introduction to Linguistics 2.

Prüfungsmethode/n
Written exams
- Midterm Exam 40 pts.
- Final Exam 60 pts.
Total: 100 points
Prüfungsinhalt/e
1. Midterm Exam: the first half of the curriculum (must be taken); and
2. Final Exam: the second half of the curriculum (must be taken and passed).
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
The grade is solely based on the total points from both exams.
These criteria must be fulfilled to pass this class:
- positive final exam
- at least 50pts from both exams
- active attendance
- completion of ALL home assignments
