LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will learn about theories and concepts in the field of semantics, that is, the study of meaning in language. They will learn how to read and critically discuss articles from the introductory and research literature. Students will also practice using available research tools for finding relevant literature for their own small research projects. Finally, students will practice writing their own literature-based research papers.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

This is a hybrid course with blocked in-class and online sessions. The in-class sessions will be focussed on reading and discussing texts from the introductory and research literature. The online sessions will be dedicated to providing feedback for the students' ongoing research projects. Students will get the opportunity to practice and refine their skills with eLearning exercises. The final blocked in-class session will take the form of a 'mini conference', in which students will present their own research projects on one of the topics discussed during the term.

Inhalt/e

The course provides a hands-on introduction to the study of meaning in language. Students will become familiarised with key concepts of the field. The course will focus on Cognitive Linguistic approaches to semantics, but other frameworks will also be discussed. Students will learn about Conceptual Metaphor Theory, semantic roles, frame semantics, processes and correlates of semantic change, as well as the relationship between semantics and pragmatics. Students will also become acquainted with the various methods employed by semantics researchers, including qualitative and quantitative approaches.
