Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students will learn about muckraking journalism/investigative journalism and social change in the US-American context, covering the time between the end of the 19th century and the present.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Methods include lectures and student presentations, workshops, joint viewing and discussion of documentary material, joint discussion of assigned reading, and use of eLearning tools on Moodle.
Course content
Ever since the late 19th century, muckrakingjournalism has helped expose social and political ills. Such writers have alwaystaken great personal and financial risks in an effort to effect social reformin the face of manifold obstacles. This course focuses on representative worksfrom this category, including Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” (1906) that belongsto the original group of early 20th century muckrakers, and morerecent examples of investigative journalism that have played a key role insocial change.
Prior knowledge expected
Students should ideally have taken some of the writing courses we offer at the department and should have at least some experience in writing academic papers.
Students should ideally have acquired effective ways of dealing with reading assignments and of preparing for classroom participation and discussions.
Curricular registration requirements
B.A. (612) students must have completed the course "British ODER American Culture: History and Society".
B.Ed./UF/Lehramt (407) students must also have completed the course "British ODER American Culture: History and Society" (ENM.001).

Student evaluation will be based on a written test and proseminar paper; course requirements include active participation and giving a presentation (details will be announced in class and available on Moodle once the course begins).
