Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
- Present and explain fundamentals of sensor networks;
- Understand and explain hardware and software aspects of sensor networks;
- Understand and explain communication aspects for sensor networks (i.e., MAC and routing protocols);
- Understand and explain mechanisms for time synchronization
- Discuss applications of sensor networks
Teaching methodology
Lecture supplemented by a dedicated lab course. Presentation of selected topics by students
Course content
Due to the advances in electronics and (wireless) communication, the development of networks of low-cost, low-power, multi-functional sensors has received increasing attention. These sensor networks are a new type of networked, embedded computing systems and are expected to become a key technology for many pervasive computing applications. This lecture covers the fundamental concepts of sensor networks, including hard- and software architectures, networking aspects, power-awareness, security and sensor fusion. The lecture is complemented by student talks on selected, application-oriented topics. In an related lab course ("Pervasive Computing Lab"), students can get hands-on experience in developing sensor network applications.

Examination methodology
The examination consists of two parts:
- Preparation and presentation of an assigned topic (approx. 20 minutes)
- Oral exam
Both parts must be successfully completed to pass the examination. One compensation is offered to students who failed in either of these examination parts.
Examination topic(s)
Topics of the lecture and the student presentations.
Example questions are available on the course website.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
Quality of the student presentation including summary report, presentation slides and discussion (25% of the overall grade)
Performance of the oral exam (75% of the overall grade)
