LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Learning objectives
- Understand the challenges and tradeoffs
- Know the basic terminology, building blocks and their interplay
- Understand selected phenomena, techniques, and protocols
- Be able to carry out basic performance evaluations
- Be qualified to start a master thesis in this area
Applied to
- Communications: Radio propagation and transmission techniques
- Networking: Network architectures and communication protocols
- Systems and technologies
See slide "learning objectives" in introductory slides.
Lehrmethodik
Didactic concept
- Offer a good balance between depth and broadness
- Cover theory, general principles, and real technology
- Offer a combination of communications and networking
- Focus on understanding and seeing the “big picture”
- Exploit methods from mathematics and stochastics
- Provide handouts that are complemented in class
- Offer many examples to illustrate concepts
- Encourage students to interact and give feedback
- Offer means to deepen and broaden the lecture contents by an
- exercise course, well-selected textbooks, and lecture videos
Lectures are complemented by group projects. Tutorial courses are offered by teaching assistants.
Inhalt/e
The lectures “Mobile Communications” and “Wireless Networks” give an introduction to mobile communication systems. Students gain a fundamental understanding of the principles behind wireless communications and networking. Current technologies — such as 4G/5G and IEEE 802.11 — are discussed as examples.
The content is structured in a bottom-up manner, starting from physical layer, then covering higher layers and networking concepts.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Intended audience: Both lectures "Mobile Communications" and "Wireless Networks" and accompanying exercise courses are intended for senior bachelor students and master students in information and communications engineering or informatics, and first year PhD students in engineering who have a master from a different area.
Informal requirements: Participants should have passed the bachelor lectures:
- Computer Networks and Network Programming,
- Communications Engineering, and
- Stochastics.
Literatur
The following textbooks are very useful:
- Schwartz: Mobile Wireless Communications, 2004
- Popovski: Wireless Connectivity, 2020
- Goldsmith: Wireless Communications, 2005
- Molisch: Wireless Communications, 2010
- Black et al.: Introduction to Wireless Systems, 2008
Additional literature recommendations will be given in class.
