Inhalt/e
In this practice-oriented and relatively openly designed course, students meet in regular intervals to work on their BA or MA thesis. As English has become the global language of scientific communication, publication, and exchange in the technical sciences and economics, there is an increasing demand for competent writing in English within university courses. It is, therefore, especially important to acquire and practice English writing skills.
This course teaches the basics of academic/scientific writing in English – understanding texts and how to use them in your own writing, the writing process itself, arguments in academic/scientific writing, text organisation and structure, and stylistic charateristics of academic/scientifc writing in English – which will then also be put into practice.
This means that students will be supported by the lecturer (and possibly a writing tutor) from 3 pm to 6 pm. During this time, they can participate in short lecture inputs/workshops from 3 pm to 4.30 pm. After this, students are supposed to work on their writing projects during a focussed writing phase from 4.30 pm to 6 pm (there will be breaks, of course!). During this time, students can also meet with the lecturer and/or writing tutor for individual writing consultations. Following the example of the open writing group "010.010 (22W) Open Writing Group: Academic English in Use I.", there will be a BigBlueButton room with a live stream of the course. This means that students are welcome to join the course online. Details will be discussed at the first online (!) meeting.
Methodology:
- short lecture inputs/workshops including discussions & group-work
- individual consultations
- independent writing time
Please note that this course will be taught entirely in English, although individual consultations can also be held in German. This, however, depends on the needs of the students.
