LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
During this course you will develop knowledge and experience of how to conduct an evolutionary research project. This means that rather than focusing on individual methods, we will discuss how to conduct a broader methodology. You will gain knowledge on how to design and complete a small research project that investigates the change, or evolution, of a spatial phenomenon over time.
Lehrmethodik
This class is based on small group work (of 2-3 people depending on class size), where you will work together to conduct a small research project. In doing so you will complete multiple presentations, group discussions, and a final report.
Inhalt/e
Block 1: Introduction
Session 1: Introduction to course.
Block 2: Presentations on methodologies
Session 2: Two groups will give 15 min presentations relating to papers read on evolutionary methodologies. Further class discussion.
Session 3: Two groups will give 15 min presentations relating to papers read on digital methodologies. Further class discussion.
Block 3: Research design
Session 4: Two groups will give 15 min presentations relating to papers read on basics of research design. Further class discussion.
Session 5: Prior to this groups will have been given a task of exploring the evolutionary path of a specific phenomenon. We will discuss the results and lessons learned in class.
Session 6: No class. Online consultations about each groups ideas for their own research project.
Session 7: Presentations or submitted written reports of each groups’ research design. Further discussion will give feedback.
Block 4: Conducting and presenting an empirical study
Session 8/9/10: No class. Online consultations about your research projects.
Session 11: Presentations of each groups’ research findings. Further discussion.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
This module is an extension of the 'Grundlagen der Methoden in der Humangeographie' seminar.
It is not mandatory to have taken that module, however, students are expected to have good basic knowledge of several methods. This module takes that basic knowledge and applies it to broader methodological issues, so we will not look at the basics of methods.
Prüfungsinformationen
Prüfungsmethode/n
Students will complete a small piece of evolutionary research. All work done in groups of 2 or 3.
Students will need to give a first short interview on a methodology or research design (Evolutionary, digital, basics of research design)
A second short interview or report that outlines their research design. We will then have a short discussion on each presentation or report to provide feedback.
A final interview that outlines their findings and the methodological process. Some further discussion will follow.
Each group will also submit a written report to accompany the final presentation.
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
1) Short presentation (20%)
2) Short presentation or report (20%)
3) Longer final presentation (20%)
