Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to connect some of the more theoretically and conceptually challenging issues discussed in the introductory course on "knowledge, culture, digitization" with their practical implications and manifestations observable in everyday life. Thorough individual on-line research, students will not only work on their research skills, but will also learn about similar-yet-different ways of approaching different topics in different discourses—in scholarly texts, newspaper articles, essays etc. Students will be able critically to assess recent impact of digitization on society and culture, and position recent/contemporary developments in a wider historical perspective.

Teaching methodology

Each class consists of a short introduction by the instructor, with occasional usage of video material,  followed by a conversation about the journalistic or academic texts precirculated for each class/topic, where students' participation is expected.

Most of the assigned literature will be in English, with smaller part in German. The discussion in class will alternate between English and German. Students are encouraged to write papers in English, but can also submit them in German.

Course content

The course addresses "Knowledge, Culture, Digitization" from a practical perspective, looking into various case studies pertaining to topics including, but not limited to:

  • Making oneself (in)visible: personal and professional on-line strategies
  • "Data, knowledge, wisdom" in policing and health
  • "Everything now": Collapsing time and space
  • Digitization, reading, and thinking: Practical and epistemological implications
  • New technologies, new forms of art
  • New technologies, new forms of social organization
  • "Producers" and "consumers," or who gets paid for what?

The course combines a historical perspective with the examination of contemporary phenomena and developments.

Academic texts discussing these issues are complemented by a selection of texts from newspapers and magazines, as well as documentaries.

Literature

The mandatory bibliography will be added in September 2022; students will be expected to do their own on-line research and identify further texts (e.g., from newspapers) relevant for specific topics.

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Students will do on-line research on the topics discussed in class, and present their findings (creating their research "portfolio"). At the end of the class, they will choose one or more topics they researched and write a paper (up to 2500 words, in English or German) in which they will summarize/expand/contextualize/analyze their findings.

Examination topic(s)

Specific topics for papers, related to assigned literature/topics discussed in class, will be set in consultation with the instructor.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

Participation in class = 30 percent of the final grade
Research portfolio = 35 percent of the final grade
Final paper = 35 percent of the final grade
