The learning process will go through the analysis of the most significant monuments and artifacts (including architectural monuments, sculpture, reliefs, paintings, mosaics, ceramics, hardstone carvings, toreutics and jewelry) originating from the Greek poleis of the Northern Black Sea region in the period of the VI century BC – IV century AD, as well as Greek artifacts from the Scythian burial mounds
Inhalt/e
Ancient authors wrote about the Northern Black Sea region as a unique region. A comparative analysis of Greek mythological tradition, data from epigraphic sources and archaeological evidence reflects the reasons for colonization of this region by Greeks, emergence of trading posts – emporia in the VII century BC, and then typical Greek poleis – in the VI century BC. The main attention will be paid to such poleis as Tyras (modern Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Dnister river delta), Olbia (between modern Mykolaiv and Ochakiv, Bug river estuary), Chersonesos (modern Sevastopol), Theodosia (European Bosporus), Panticapaeum (modern Kerch), Tanais (Don river delta), Phanagoria (Taman Peninsula), Gorgippia (modern Anapa).
Comprehensive study of surviving monuments – temples, palaestrae, gymnasiums, Chersonesos theater, Roman thermae, funerary monuments, provides information about the development of religious life (cults, rites, agonistic festivals), “muse” culture (philosophy, literature, music, theater) and other features of Greek and Roman periods in the history of the Northern Black Sea region poleis. This also testifies to the presence of poleis multiculturalism, which became especially widespread in the first centuries AD.
A deep analysis of archaeological data, understanding of history and cultural development of the Northern Black Sea region Greek poleis, will allow us to answer the question why, despite the constant barbarian encirclement and strong Roman influence, they managed to preserve Greek culture and close ties with the Hellenic world until the very end of their existence.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- Urban planning and improvement of the Northern Black Sea region Greek poleis.
- Architecture of temples, public and residential buildings, burials.
- Sculpture, reliefs, murals, pottery, mosaic.
- Engraved gems, intaglios; golden, silver and electrum items.
- Greek cults, festivals and agones; syncretic and Roman cults; Christians and Gnostics.
- Greek and Roman games, gladiator fights.
- Elite, establishment and outsiders; women, old people and children.
