Inhalt/e

One of the most important variables that affect the nature and the extent to which learners successfully acquire a second language (L2) is the context of learning, e.g. whether an L2 is acquired in a foreign language context (such as learning English in Germany or Austria), or in a second language context (such as learning English in the United States). This seminar deals with the study abroad (SA) context, i.e. learning an L2 in countries where this language is the official and main language of the society. Study abroad often entails a combination of planned curriculum and a stay with a host family. In recent decades, the effects of study abroad on general L2 proficiency have extensively been researched, and most studies conducted to date report substantial gains in proficiency: study abroad is more beneficial than any other learning context. In this seminar we will survey recent research on study abroad and examine the following questions: What role do amount of L2 exposure and interaction with other speakers (e.g. in social networks or the host family) play during SA? What are the general benefits of SA? Are there particular domains of language use that benefit more than others?
