This is an EXCURSION course! We will be travelling to France on a joint excursion with Romanistik. There will be some in-person classes scheduled before and after the excursion to prepare you and to discuss the excursion. Please check the dates listed to make sure you can attend both the in-person classes and the excursion. Details about the cost of the excursion will be made available in the first class sitting (estimated cost around 1,000 euros but internal funding will reduce this amount!).

  • April 30: Paris: Le Louvre / musée de Cluny– Champs Elysées – Arc de triomphe – Montmartre – Spend the night in Paris
  • May 1: Departure from Paris in the early morning for MontSaint-Michel (4 hour drive), Stop in Giverny?, Visit the Abbey in Mont Saint-Michel, continue on to Caen (1.5 hour drive), arrive in Caen in the evening – Spend the night in Caen
  • May 2: Caen: Visit the University of Caen, the Abbey of Saint-Étienne,the Normandy Museum – Spend the night in Caen

At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • identify key events in the history of England with a focus on the Anglo-Norman period and peace- and war-times;
  • define (and exemplify) subject-specific terminology, especially as it relates to material culture and textile production;
  • read and understand basic texts in Middle English and the Latin text from the Bayeux Tapestry;
  • examine (anglo-norman) social, historical, and cultural elements and explain their significance;
  • investigate the production of textiles, specifically the Bayeux Tapestry, including the distribution of materials; and
  • describe and explain their process of learning about elements of material culture as they relate to the Bayeux Tapestry and the Middle English period.

Lehrmethodik

Students will receive some instructor-generated lectures, guided activities, and peer-generated mini-lectures on topics related to the course.

The major part of this course is an excursion to France. Students will be introduced to numerous learning opportunities in natural settings: an abbey, museums, churches, et al. Students will be asked to engage with these settings in order to complete assignments as part of the overall assessment of the course. 

Inhalt/e

In this course the following topics will be discussed:
  • outline of English history with a focus on the Middle English period, starting with the Battle of Hastings;
  • brief introduction to Middle English and Latin with focus on:
  •      basic vocabulary and grammar of Middle English,
  •      analysis of excerpts of important texts, and
  •      analysis of the Latin text included on the Bayeux Tapestry;
  • introduction to material culture, specifically related to textiles as well as writing and peace-and warcraft;
  • the depiction of historical events in art and text with a focus on the depiction of war and peace; and
  • in-depth study of textiles, specifically the Bayeux Tapestry, including issues in material culture (fabrics, cloth production, ink, embroidery, language) as they relate to the Bayeux Tapestry.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

This course provides an introduction to the Middle English period with particular focus on the Bayeux tapestry and material culture. No previous knowledge of this topic is expected (but is considered a benefit). Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of cultural studies as covered in the introductory lectures that are prerequisites for this course.Students’ interests may also be taken into account when deciding on which particular topics to address in their assignments for the course; see Moodle for details on these assignments.

Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen

For the BA in Anglistik und Amerikanistik, this course belongs to the Pflichtfächer in Fachliches Grundstudium Culture and requires students to have passed either British Culture: History and Society or American Culture: History and Society. In exceptional circumstances, admission to the course may be granted at the discretion of the instructor even if the aforementioned prerequisite have not been met. 

Literatur

All materials will be made available digitally on Moodle. It is important that students have access to these for in-class discussions, and they are indispensable for the work that will be done in the course. The instructor will provide supplementary material as requested/needed.

Prüfungsmethode/n

1. JOURNAL (70%): MINIMUM OF FIVE ENTRIES THAT ARE DIRECTLY TIED TO THE EXCURSION

Students will produce a minimum of five journal entries related to the outings planned for the excursion. These should be written according to the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS Author-Date) guidelines. A rubric from how these entries will be graded will be available on Moodle. Extra entries can serve as an example of student interest and can help the instructor with assessing overall performance in the course.

2. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (30%)

Students will produce an annotated bibliography of selected academic literature related to the course. The sources cited here should also appear as cited literature in the journal entries.

The written assignments reflect the content of the course and intended learning objectives (see above). 

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Students will be assessed on the in-class and excursion-based participation and on the successful completion of the required journal entries and annotated bibliography.

Rubrics will be provided on Moodle so that students are aware of the content and language-based criteria upon which their written work will be assessed.
