Students will gain a basic familiarity with the cultural history of New York City and the greater New York region. They will be able to think critically about major U.S. cultural discourses and a variety of literary genres in relation to this history. Students will improve their research, analytical, and writing skills, and advance their competence in interpreting texts within their specific socio-cultural and historical contexts from a perspective that problematizes race, class, and gender.
Lehrmethodik
This course is designed to emphasize in-class student participation. Teaching methods include short input lectures, short oral presentations on selected topics by students, in-class discussion of assigned primary and theoretical texts through close readings, and group discussion.
Inhalt/e
In this class, we turn to major aspects of New York City and the greater New York region’s literary and cultural history from its colonial beginnings to the present. Through a broad range of texts including short stories and a novel, journalistic and essayistic works, poetry, art, music, films, and TV series, we will look closely at the place and its representations and meanings. Our texts and films, for example Herman Melville’s short story “Bartleby, the Scrivener” (1853), F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Modernist masterpiece The Great Gatsby (1925), or Martin Scorsese’s film Gangs of New York (2002), will give an impression of the diversity of New York experiences in relation to U.S. cultural history. Thus, we explore New York City through the eyes of various individuals and groups, specific places and histories, and in relation to questions of race, class, and gender. At the same time, we place specific histories in conversation with broader historical contexts and the greater New York region, and examine New York as part of the American mind and the United States’ national mythology.
