Intendierte Lernergebnisse

At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • explain the history of taboos with relevant examples from languages-cultures found in the Pacific islands;
  • define (and exemplify) subject-specific terminology;
  • examine culture-specific taboos and explain their socio-historical significance;
  • examine language-specific taboos and explain their linguistic significance;
  • investigate how taboos arise and how they contribute to societal/language change; and
  • identify how learners acquire and use taboo language.

Class discussions along with teacher- and student-generated input in the forum of lectures and mini-presentations

Inhalt/e

This course provides an introduction to linguistic and cultural taboos. In this course the following topics will be discussed:

  • origin and history of taboo;
  • types of taboo (including but not limited to):
    • language (name/word avoidance, swearing),
    • body language (gestures), and
    • cultural (death, tattoos, religious, food, et al.);
  • analysis of taboos with a focus on anglophone countries;
  • taboos as a catalyst for societal and language change; and
  • L2 acquisition and use of taboo speech.

Students’ interests may also be taken into account when deciding which aspects of this topic will be covered, particularly as regards the choice of which anglophone countries to examine.

Erwartete Vorkenntnisse

No previous knowledge of this topic is expected (but is considered a benefit). Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of cultural studies as covered in the introductory lectures that are prerequisites for this course. 

Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen

For the BA in Anglistik und Amerikanistik, this course belongs to the Pflichtfächer in Fachliches Grundstudium Culture and requires students to have passed either British Culture: History and Society or American Culture: History and Society. In exceptional circumstances, admission to the course may be granted at the discretion of the instructor even if the aforementioned prerequisite have not been met.

Literatur

All materials will be made available digitally on Moodle. It is important that students have access to these for in-class discussions, and they are indispensable for the work that will be done in the course. The instructor will provide supplementary material as requested/needed.

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

1.INFORMATIONAL POSTER (30%)

Students will produce an informational, creative poster on taboos with either a topic (e.g., death, bodily functions) or location theme. A sample template will be shared with students along with specific instructions about word count and content. The poster should have a cross-cultural focus that informs others about how cultures treat certain topics. Posters will be graded according to a rubric available on Moodle. Depending on time and availability, posters may be placed in the department for others to view.

2.FINAL WRITTEN EXAMINATION (70%)

A cumulative written exam will take place at the end of term (see Moodle schedule for date). Specifics as to the content and format of the exam will be shared in the course.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Meaningful participation offers students an opportunity to engage with the course content, peers, and the instructor. In-class and homework assignments are used to help students process course content. A passing grade for the poster and the final exam is required to pass the course. An overall average of at least 60% of the graded assignments is required in order to receive a passing grade for the course. Any academic texts should be written in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS Author-Date) guidelines. Students should inform themselves of the department’s policy on academic papers and plagiarism.
