Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students learn about  global skills and develop those relevant to English language learning and teaching, which are grouped in five clusters:

  • communication and collaboration skills,
  • creativity and critical thinking skills,
  • intercultural competence and citizenship skills,
  • emotional self-regulation and wellbeing skills, and
  • digital literacies.

Furthermore, they learn about the Dalton pedagogy and its implementation in the COOL methodology.

Teaching methodology

Inspired by presentations by the course instructor and excursion hosts, students engage in research activities, group discussions, collaborative project work, and individual assignments. They participate in observations and interviews at an excursion to BBS Rohrbach from 14 to 16 December 2022 (https://www.bbs-rohrbach.at/unsere-schultypen/dalton-paedagogik/).

Course content

This course deals with questions related to global skills in English language teaching (ELT), such as,

  • What are global skills and why are they important?
  • How can activities that support the development of global skills be integrated into ELT at Austrian secondary schools?
  • What should teachers consider when planning and teaching global skills in English?

Participants in the BEd programme have completed module ENE:

  • ENE.001 Introduction to Communicative Language Teaching
  • ENE.002 Teaching for Competence Across the Language Skills
  • ENE.003 & ENE.004 PPS1: English

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Active participation during the class meetings and the excursion are essential in this course. The students complete group projects and keep a portfolio. There is no written exam.

Students who discontinue this course without written notification by 31 October 2022 receive a negative grade.

The final grade depends on attendance, participation, and the portfolio. Details will be announced in class.
