From real-life icons like Alessandro del Piero and Cristiano Ronaldo to beloved television characters like Dani Rojas and Roy Kent: this course is designed for those who love football in particular (or are just interested in sport generally) but are not greatly taken with the soap opera antics of the game or the way in which it is portrayed in the media. Wallow in the nostalgia of football in black and white or get stuck into an understanding of the social roots of the local derby matches.
By way of hands-on lecture input, student projects and presentations as well as self-directed studying, students will practice and thus acquire critical/cultural thinking skills that will help them develop a critical understanding and appreciation of association football culture and its various facets. A grounded analysis of power, identity and globalization amongst football fans, this course will appeal to scholars and students of English studies with interests in the …

Inhalt/e
“Hey! Hello, coaches. Thank you for the opportunity. Just like back in Guadalajara, you say it, I do it, coach. FOOTBALL IS LIFE!”
– Dani Rojas (Ted Lasso, 2020, Apple TV+)
This is one of the show’s most beloved quotes. On one level, it’s just an expression of how much Dani loves football. On another, it’s a metaphor for the show itself, with all the relationships and drama that revolve around the sport.
Football (or soccer) is one of the most played, most viewed, and most talked about sports in the world. For centuries, it has been used as a method of recreation, but in the last couple of decades it has become an essential part of the economy and culture of many countries around the globe. On top of that, many people become obsessed with the teams they support. The culture of British and European football has long been a talking point for people all over the world, and will continue to be so as long as that very culture is creating both controversy and emotions. But why does football culture in Britain look so different to the footballing culture in other countries? England is considered the home of football and many people believe that the sport originated in England. Football, however, is universal.
Primarily tackling the unique themes and concepts of football related issues and, at times, other related topics, students are encouraged to learn the basic principles, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the footballing world. Specific examples, taken from various ages throughout the history of (international) football, highlight the importance of taking a closer look at what makes analyzing various football cultures so fascinating.
