LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will gain an understanding of the diversity and complexities of the environmental justice movement in the United States and of American environmental justice literature. Through selected texts and their systematic analysis, they will be able to identify and critically work with concepts and terminology of environmental justice scholarship. They will further develop their skills in the systematic analysis of literature and advance their competence in interpreting texts within their specific socio-cultural and historical contexts.

Lehrmethodik

This course is designed to emphasize in-class student participation. Teaching methods include short input lectures, oral presentations by students, in-class exploration of theoretical and primary texts through close textual analysis and group discussion.

Inhalt/e

There is, by now, a common consensus across scholarly and political discourses that environmental problems are always also social problems. While conveying an important fact, this truism at the same time hardly captures what lies at the heart of environmental justice, namely the many complex interconnections between environmental problems, goals of sustainability, and social inequities. Our seminar will focus on such interconnections through literature and literary criticism, exploring race-, class-, and gender-based environmental inequalities. We will begin by reading theoretical texts from the rich field of environmental justice scholarship in order to introduce terminology and central concepts, and turn to African American and Native American poetry and short fiction. Moving on, we will read two novels: Karen Tei Yamashita’s Tropic of Orange (1997), which raises environmental justice questions in the context of globalization through its multiple perspectives, and the first part of N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth series, The Fifth Season (2015), a post-apocalyptic sf that addresses caste distinctions and identity questions on a volatile planet. Literature will thus serve as a lens to explore a diverse set of environmental justice experiences, problems, and potential solutions. Our readings are designed to help us understand better the interconnectedness of local and global concerns and the significance of social inequalities to contemporary and historical environmental crises and policies.
