LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Pervasive Computing is the idea that day-to-day objects such as light bulbs, flower pots, coffee mugs, shoes, chairs, carpets, etc., can be embedded with microprocessors, thus making them capable of data processing and communication.
This lab course in Pervasive Computing aims to identify aspects of human lives that can be automated using a combination of sensors, actuators, and embedded platforms.
Specifically, the objective is to identify a problem (in the domain of Pervasive Computing), design a practical solution, implement the solution as a prototype and demonstrate how the implemented solution solves the identified problem.
Course participants can propose their research ideas or choose from existing research problems.
All hardware, software, and tools required shall be provided.

- Using cameras as speed guns: https://youtu.be/HcM8aXYyarQ
- Home automation: https://youtu.be/XevK6ALJr5E
- Low cost wattmeter for cycling: https://youtu.be/y2bbOzM2yD4

Lehrmethodik
Course participants shall work in groups of two (2) to design and implement practical solutions to problems in Pervasive Computing. The first three (3) to four (4) meetings shall be lectures on existing embedded platforms and some selected communication protocols. Participants shall use the remaining weekly lecture hours to implement their chosen projects.
Inhalt/e
Some examples of pervasive computing devices / systems / applications are:
- Precision (smart) agricultural systems
- Smart lock (security) systems
- Smartwatches (Apple Watch, Fitbit, Samsung Active2, MiBand5, etc)
- Automatic heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Real-time bus information systems
- Automatic irrigation systems
- Object recognition / tracking /surveillance systems
- Health monitoring applications
- Vehicle information / management / maintenance applications
- Environment monitoring applications
- Home automation applications
- Utility meter / monitoring applications
