Intendierte Lernergebnisse

By the end of the course, students will be able to engage in critical debates on the significance of borders across education, politics, sociology, international relations, security and economics.

The students will also be able to critically assess various theoretical approaches to border migration in modern times, and better understand the north-to-south and south-to-north migration flow dichotomy.

The students will be able to compare across case-studies within conflict, post-conflict and health crises-related scenarios.

Learning outcomes:

- An understanding of the gravity of borders in both conflict and post-conflict times, in addition to tackling their connection with global migration movements.

- The ability to critically analyze problems both in written and in spoken form via class discussions.

- An understanding of the drivers of migration and its implications in a public healthcare crisis.

- The ability to compare across case-studies and utilize different theoretical approaches from several social fields on the topic of borders.

- Excellence in scholarly writing and spoken presentation, in addition to exposure to in-class discussions.

Lehrmethodik

This course is designed as an interactive, online seminar with attendance and written assignments both counting towards the final grade.

Inhalt/e

According to the 2020 World Migration Report, there are 272 million migrants worldwide, one third of whom are refugees, amounting to the highest recorded level of cross-border migration since the Second World War. Those who manage to cross borders, often daily, confront a crisis-rid system.

Taking a comparative approach via African, Latin American, European and Middle Eastern case-studies, this multidisciplinary course draws on diverse accounts of cross-border migration in the context of education, conflict and post-conflict.
