Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students shall know the scope of media law, the obligations of media owners and be able to assess typical risks connected with media law.

Teaching methodology

Lecture, Case Studies, Discussion

Course content

  • Basics of Media Law, Fundamental rights involved
  • Definition and types of media (online, offline etc)
  • Obligation of media owners
  • Criminal offenses via media
  • Discussion of interesting and recent cases in media law
  • Media law-related e-commerce law
  • Media law-related intellectual property law

Prior knowledge expected

  • Basic knowledge of the law system

  • Berka, Heindl, Höhne, Koukal, Mediengesetz Praxiskommentar (4. Auflage 2019)
  • Holoubek, Gärner, Grafl, Das Recht der Massenmedien (4. Auflage 2019)


Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

  • Active participation / taking part in the discussion
  • if possible (depending on the number of the participants): case presentations

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

  • Written test (80%)

  • Active participation / taking part in the discussions in the lecture (20%) 

  • if possible: case presentation - adressing all relevant points of the  case will get a percentage to be deducted from the two other criteria

50% of the points needed for passing the course
