Course content

Die Sentimentanalyse hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einem der aktivsten und produktivsten Forschungsfelder der Computerlinguistik entwickelt. Das Anwendungsfeld ist sehr umfassend und beinhaltet z.B. Zusammenfassung von Produkt- oder Filmkritiken, Trendanalyse auf Twitter oder Vorhersage von Wahlergebnissen durch Erfassen von Onlinekommentaren. Im Seminar soll ein Auszug der existierenden Literatur behandelt werden. Es wird ausschließlich Primärliteratur gelesen.

Folgende Themen werden abgedeckt:

- Erkennung subjektiver Sprache

- Automatische Unterscheidung von Positivität und Negativität

- Extraktion von Opinion Holdern und Opinion Targets

- Erkennung von gefälschten Reviews

- Ironieerkennung

- Erkennung von beleidigender Sprache/Hate Speech

Algorithmisch werden sowohl regelbasierte Methoden als auch überwachte Lernverfahren behandelt.

Die vorgestellten Arbeiten werden einen vorwiegend linguistischen Fokus haben.

Prior knowledge expected

Grundkenntnisse in Computerlinguistik/Natural Language Processing werden vorausgesetzt. (Eine Wiederholungssitzung zur Auffrischung der relevanten Kenntnisse ist am Anfang der Lehrveranstaltung geplant.)

Da die Primärliteratur ausschließlich in englischer Sprache verfügbar ist, sollten KursteilnehmerInnen über hinreichende Englischkenntnisse verfügen.

At the end of this course, students should be able to read and assess primary literature in the field of sentiment analysis.

Course content

Sentiment analysis has become one of the most popular and active fields in computational linguistics in recent years. Its area of application is fairly wide. It includes summarization of product or movie reviews, trend analysis on Twitter or the prediction of election outcomes on the basis on online commentaries. In this seminar some excerpts of existing literature will be discussed. We will exclusively read priminary literature.

Following topics will be covered:

- detection of subjective language

- classification of positive and negative polarity

- extraction of opinion holders and opinion targets

- detection of fake reviews

- detection of irony

- abusive language detection/hate speech detection

Algorithmically, we will consider both rule-base and supervised learning methods.

All literature that we consider will have a strong focus on linguistic engineering.

Prior knowledge expected

Basic knowledge in computational linguistics/natural language processing is required. (There will be a session revising the relevant material at the beginning of the course.)

Since the primary literature is exclusively available in English, course participants should have sufficient knowledge of English.
