LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

‘Gamer’ culture perpetuates an oppositional mindset, rather than acknowledging the affective, transformative experiences videogames can provide. The focus on challenge, mastery, and conflict is deeply rooted in most definitions of the medium. Students will explore the possibility of an alternative set of societal values, an understanding of videogames as designed systems of opportunities, constituted by affordances and constraints, that fosters a sense of systemic awareness, leaving players better equipped to critically reflect upon, accept, and internalise the experience of consequences. They will understand videogames as a means of cultural expression, providing profound moments of personal, but also collective and societal transformation.

Lehrmethodik

Reading and discussion of theoretical texts in class; discussion of relevant example videogames in class; written open-book exam.

Inhalt/e

Game Studies, configuration, cybernetics, agency, play experiences, citizenship.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

The final grade is an aggregate of...

  • 20% Active Participation in Class: Come prepared, read the required theoretical texts, do any additional research if necessary; think critically, and contribute to discussions and analyses.
  • 30% Game Analysis and Discussion (45min): Introduce a game and analyse how its design uses (or does not use) the element of challenge (30min), do a Q&A (15min), and then moderate a plenary, in-depth experience and discussion of one example sequence; write-up of analysis and any issues brought up during the Q&A in a short academic paper to be uploaded on Moodle no later than two weeks after the session (pdf, 1500 words).
  • 50% Written On-Campus Open-Book Exam: Select exactly 10 out of 12 questions asked (you lose the highest scoring sections beyond 10) and reply in a short paragraph each (max. 100 words). A question scores from 0 to 5 points (think of the star rating system), depending on the quantity and quality of information given, and the point total results in your grade:
    • 46 – 50 points = 1A, or First Grade
       41 – 45 points = 2B, or Upper Second Grade
       31 – 40 points = 3C, or Lower Second Grade
       26 – 30 points = 4D, or Pass Grade
       00 – 25 points = 5F, or Fail Grade
    • Cheating is a serious offence and will result in an automatic 5F on the exam!
  • Failing one of the three pillars of assessment fails the entire course!

Prüfungsinhalt/e

All theoretical texts and videogames discussed in class.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe

Quantity and quality of task fulfillment; quantity and quality of theoretical literature used; quality of analysis, and quality of application of theoretical concepts and terminology.
