LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will become familiar with the history and culture of a little known, and less understood, region of the United States: Appalachia. They will also learn about the relationship between the traditional culture of Appalachia and contemporary mainstream culture in the US. One of the aims of the course is to encourage students to reflect about how cultures are described from outside the culture and to what purpose.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The structure of the syllabus is a mixture of chronological and thematic. The course begins with description of the Appalachian population and cultural traits toward the beginning of the 20c and reaches up to the present day. Themes include the western expansion over the mountains as it is depicted in song, painting and popular culture and the role and figure of women.

Inhalt/e

The mountainous region known as Appalachia is, from an economic point of view, one of the poorest in the United States, but it is also one of the richest in terms of culture. It has long been a repository for traditional music from the British Isles and at the same time a wellspring of some of the most important musical genres in America, including country and bluegrass. This course will examine Appalachian culture and its offshoots from a variety of perspectives and will draw on diverse and multimodal sources, ranging from quasi-ethnographic accounts from the early 20th c (the first reliable descriptions of the population), to publications by folk song collectors, the findings of recording industry talent scouts dating from the late 20s and early 30s, images of hillbillies in popular culture (TV, comics), documentaries, recent movies and current depictions in the media. Since most of what has been written or filmed about this culture has been authored by people who have been external to it, the course also offers an occasion to reflect on the role of the observer in the process of observation.
