Inhalt/e
Being able to understand and use idioms boosts a learner’s proficiency in the second language. Their mastery is thus an important goal for learners of English. Yet, idiomatic expressions are considered difficult to teach because they often contain unpredictable meanings, grammar and collocations, and have special connotations (Cacciari 1993; Moon 1995; Abisamra 2002). Traditional methods that focus on rote learning and memorization have been criticized for treating idioms as isolated entities, without systematic arrangements and authentic circumstances. Current research thus seeks to put idiomatic expressions in a more meaningful learning context for foreign language (L2) learners.
In this course, we will explore how English idioms could be taught to learners of English. Particular attention will be given to the role one's first language plays in acquiring idioms in a second language. Additionally, we will investigate what factors (e.g., the use of visuals, the presentation of idioms in contexts, the study of an idiom's etymology, etc.) might help or hinder the comprehension and retention of idiomatic expressions.
