Inhalt/e
Starting out from a wide definition of “the mob” meaning a large, disorderly crowd that is often destructive and violent, the seminar sets out to explore this phenomenon in its diverse forms and shaping power in American culture. We will begin by looking at the role of mobs and crowds during the birth of the nation in the revolutionary era, and in relation to the frontier and its concepts of justice and law. A second focus will be on racialized (white) mob violence and the history of lynching, as we read Charles W. Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition (1901), a novel about the Wilmington insurrection of 1898. While not a major focus, we will furthermore touch upon “the mob” as informal term for the Mafia in twentieth-century America, and, in the second half of the semester, turn to representations of mobs in films and the digital age. Focusing (partially in excerpts) on diverse works such as Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York (2002), James Ponsoldt’s The Circle (2017), and Jamie Roberts’ documentary Four Hours at the Capitol (2021), in relation to the literary works studied previously, reveals mobs and their representations as significant parts of American culture and as interacting with ideas of democracy, individualism, morality, the law, and the public.
