This course will focus on censorship in several areas of popular British culture in the mid to late 20th Century, including comics, magazines and film. We will identify the repetitive features that were aimed at scaring the public into believing the potentially harmful effects of exposure to so-called subversive media. We will see how the British government took it upon itself to protect it's citizens and children.

During our voyage, we will touch upon the work of Stanley Cohen and his seminal study of 1950s British culture in FolkDevils and Moral Panics. We will also become aquainted with a certain Mary Whitehouse, who became a bulwark of morality and conservativism and saw her influence and fears reach the highest echelons of British society and politics.                                                                                                       We shall look for similaritities in the social backdrops at the time and investigate whether parallels can be drawn to the present, where there are ever increasing calls for censorship on social media platforms by the very people providing the services.

Students will recieve several obligatory assignments throughout the course, requiring reading, research and written work.

Please be aware that I may on occasion use the full 2hrs to accommodate technical issues, presentations and workshops...

Be it face to face or online, attendance at the first session (Tuesday 2nd March 6pm), is compulsory, as the basics of the course will be presented, and important administrational “stuff” can be discussed. Applicants may register online up until 23:59pm on the 28th Feb.

I intend to hold this course face to face at the university room: V.1.04 on Tuesdays from 6 to 8pm. If, owing to CoVid, and we are forced to hold the course online..... I will adapt the course and hold it via TEAMS. 

So...... in order to facilitate a quick change to online learning, please download the Teams App to your PCs, laptops, smartphones etc, and try to become familiar with the application if you are not already.
