Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Write a formal academic paragraph
- Confidently use complex sentences in their writing
- Actively and accurately use a range of academic vocabulary and phrases in their writing
- Cite and reference sources appropriately
- Participate in discussions freely and openly
Teaching methodology
In- and out-of-class tasks and exercises, extensive self-study, writing assignments.
Students are required to regularly read academic texts in English to develop their academic reading skills and awareness of academic vocabulary and register.
The course will be conducted entirely in English.
Course content
This course covers the following:
- Paragraph and essay structure
- Features of formal academic writing (including organization, vocabulary, grammar, and rhetoric)
- Basic academic reading skills
- Conducting a literature search
- Scholarly practice: understanding and avoiding plagiarism
- Citing and referencing (paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting)
- Introduction to online tools such as corpora and the academic phrasebank
ATTENTION: after an initial diagnostic writing task, some students will be required to attend sessions at the Writing Center to fulfil the requirements of this course
Prior knowledge expected
Strong English language ability (B1+ to B2 level).
Literature
Recommended reading will be given throughout the semester.
