Intended learning outcomes
Die Lehrveranstaltung gibt eine Einführung für Master-Studierende in die Grundlagen von (verteilten) Multimedia-Systemen.
Die Teilnehmer*innen sollen:
- die Grundlagen von Multimedia-Anwendungen, -Kommunikation und -Protokollen, Quality of Service (QoS) und Quality of Experience (QoE) sowie Ressourcen-Management kennenlernen;
- die Verfahren und Werkzeuge von Bild- und Videocodierung wiederholen bzw. kennenlernen;
- einige Einblicke in Multimedia-Server und Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) erhalten;
- im Rahmen von Übungen und kleinen Projekten praktische Erfahrungen zu Multimedia-Codierung (Kompression) und Multimedia-Datenübertragung ("Streaming") gewinnen;
- sich ggf. auf weiterführende Lehrveranstaltungen und Projekte (z.B. Praxissemester, Diplomarbeit) im Bereich Multimedia vorbereiten.
Teaching methodology
Vorträge des Lehrveranstaltungsleiters; Ausarbeitung von Projekten (Programmierung) durch die Studierenden und Präsentation der Ergebnisse.

Prior knowledge expected
- Gute Programmierkenntnisse erforderlich!
- Besuch der Lehrveranstaltungen Betriebssysteme, Rechnernetze und Einführung in die Multimediatechnik.

Intended learning outcomes
The course gives an introduction to master students of the basics of (distributed) multimedia systems.
The students will ...
- ... become familiar with the fundamentals of multimedia applications, communication and protocols, Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) as well as resource management;
- ... get to know techniques and tools for image and video coding (compression);
- ... get some familiarity with multimedia servers and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs);
- ... get some hands-on experience in multimedia coding (compression) and multimedia communication (streaming) in the course of assignments and small-scale projects;
- ... acquire expertise required for further courses and projects (e.g., practical term, master thesis) in the area of multimedia systems and communication.
Teaching methodology
Presentations of the essential material by the professor; practical excercises (programming /project assignments) and presentation of results by students.

- Basics of image and video encoding (compression)
- Basics of multimedia communication and protocols (streaming)
- Multimedia servers and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)
Prior knowledge expected
- Good programming skills are required!
- We further expect good understanding of operating systems and computer networks.
- Some knowledge in multimedia coding is advantageous, but not mandatory. For students who completed bachelor at AAU we expect the following courses completed: "Betriebssysteme", "Rechnernetze" and "Einführung in die Multimediatechnik".
