Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

  • Students can name, describe and critically assess fundamental concepts in sociolinguistics.
  • Students can describe and discuss the sociolinguistics of different linguistic communities.
  • Students can follow and understand the recent scientific discourse in sociolinguistics.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course will consist of an introduction to the different topics in sociolinguistics and to variation in language, as a sociolinguistic phenomenon.
The course will be mainly based on Introducing Sociolinguistics by Miriam Meyerhoff (2006) and consist of weekly reading assignments according to the course plan that will be distributed in the first session of the seminar. Additional papers selected by the instructor on the course topic will be discussed.
The lectures will be supplemented by student presentations and subsequent discussion in class.
Students have to:
1) participate actively in the course;
2) participate in a presentation (assigned in the first session of the seminar);
3) hand in a portfolio consisting of weekly assigned exercises.

The language of instruction will be English, but other languages spoken by the students and listed above can be used. 

Course content

This course will provide an introduction to sociolinguistics and to variation in language, as a sociolinguistic phenomenon. Fundamental concepts will be discussed: Language as a biological entity; Language and identity; Linguistic variation and change; Language attitudes; Overt prestige and covert prestige; Linguistic repertoire; Language contact; Bilingualism and multilingualism; Diglossia and poliglossia; Language maintenance; Language shift.
