LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

By the end of the module, using data for English, you will be well drilled in:

                  analysing transcribed spoken corpus data,

and analysing items with regard to their complex multi-functionality

.

You will also have acquired:

an understanding about what a corpus is, and how it can be beneficially used,

a fresh (first?) real insight into the complexities of sponataneous speech where planning and production effectively occur simultaneously .

and an understanding of how a corpus helps with linguistic description.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

By the end of the module, using data for English, you will be well drilled in:

        analysing transcribed spoken corpus data,

and analysing items with regard to their complex multi-functionality

and understanding the nature of that multi-functionality.

You will also have acquired and understanding:

about what a corpus is, and how it can be beneficially used,

how the planning and production of spontaneous speech effectively occur simultaneously .

of what a linguistic corpus is and how a corpus helps with linguistic description.

Inhalt/e

Subdisciplines in linguistics such as cognitive linguistics, forensic linguistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics apply linguistics to patterns of language behaviour with regard to an abstract construct of the real world. As a subdiscipline, corpus linguistics is also concerned with language use in real world discourse situations but does so specifically through the empirical analysis of corpus data.

Corpus Linguistics comprises three sub-fields, which are both independent and inter-related.

 (1) As a subdiscipline of Linguistics, the most important element is that of Linguistics, with a focus on patterns of actual language use and their communicative function. This sub-field is motivated by research questions, which build on the accumulated body of knowledge in the field.

 (2) To this end, Corpus Linguistics makes use of a corpus and of tools and methods to exploit that corpus. Corpus creation and corpus exploitation, research into which has created this sub-field, do not in themselves constitute Corpus Linguistics.

(3) The third sub-field can be said to be corpus description, or the characterisation of corpus data. Whereas this activity is necessary for Corpus Linguistics, it is often carried out without any motivation by or relevance to linguistic inquiry.

This Proseminar will thus show that:

  1. Corpus investigations are motivated by linguistic research questions, the results of which are interpreted relative to a linguistic theory or a cumulative body of previous linguistic research.
  2. Corpora are deliberately designed to represent a real-world domain of language use, i.e. the corpus is not a random collection of words, or even a random collection of linguistic tokens, but rather, the corpora are collections of objects that exist in the natural world, i.e. texts.
  3. As corpora provide frequency information above all, quantitative findings must not be an end of corpus description in itself but must be interpreted as linguistically interpretable and accompanied by textual examples.
  4. More specifically, in the context of these theoretical premises, you will underake a critical analysis of  a number of pragmatic discourse markers from the SPICE-Ireland Corpus to show their function and distribution across different types of spoken data.
