Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
For this course, students are taken on a journey through the philosophical and literary roots of literary theory, from Plato to the 21st century. During this journey, they will be introduced to the people, thoughts and application of the major literary theories.
The goal is to broadly paint the picture of the "lineage" of literary theory to this day, position it within its wider context, and discuss how it impacts the way we think about and enjoy literature (and other media) in the present.
The invitation for this course is for students to engage and sharpen their critical thinking skills, and to investigate how the past of literary theory impacts the present of how we engage with and experience literature and media today.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
This course will be taught in the blended learning format, which means that we will have both online and in person events. Exact ratio will be dependent on future developments re COVID procedures. Online events will be conducted via Zoom.
Literary theory until the 20th century will be presented by myself, while current literary theory and criticism will be presented by student teams during a presentation (which includes a write up).
Instead of a seminar paper, students will be asked to critically engage with regular prompts, using writing practices that will be supportive for their later writing projects, such as a bachelor and master thesis. The total amount of words will add up to the total of one seminar paper.
