LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Vortraege, Folien, (Haus)Uebungen, kleine praktische Projekte.
Inhalt/e
Symmetrische und Asymmetrische Kryptografie, inklusive Post-quantum Kryptografie.
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
This unit aims to expose students to the way applied cryptographers (and security professionals more generally) think. We will study a number of cryptographic techniques, mainly focusing on encryption, emphasising how practice informs the theory and design of modern cryptography (and vice versa).
During the interactive slot on Tuesday, there will be a mix of practical exercises (individually and group work), hands-on research, and discussion based learning. For these interactive components I might invite researchers from the Cybersecurity group along. You are expected to attend these Tuesday sessions.
For the mostly non-interactive slot on Thursday, I will provide pre-recorded videos via my YouTube channel, and I will be online for questions via chat/messaging on Discord. I will not monitor attendance on Thursdays.
I will draw on several textbooks, the first one has a free online version available:
- Smart: Cryptography made simple (original here: https://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~nsmart/Crypto_Book/, and pdf version here: https://www.cs.umd.edu/~waa/414-F11/IntroToCrypto.pdf)
- Katz and Lindell: Introduction to Modern Cryptography.
Anybody who has an interest in Cybersecurity (aka Information Security aka System Security aka IT Security) should attend this course.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Pre-recorded lectures, hands on exercises (online in groups and individually), discussions, a small project.
All of the material is provided in English language, and the "default" language in class is English. However, it is absolutely fine if you ask a question in German language, or if you need a further clarification in German.
Inhalt/e
Modern cryptography focussing on encryption (for both data at rest and in transit). We will thus cover symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, and consider how the stuff underpinning web security (TLS), messenger security (WhatsApp), smart card security, IoT security, etc. really works.
This year's special focus will be on the impact of quantum computing on cryptography and cybersecurity.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Ideally students have some grounding in discrete mathematics; in particular modular arithmetic, as well as grounding in basic probability theory. But I will as far as possible provide hands on exercises on different levels to cater for a wide audience.
Curriculare Anmeldevoraussetzungen
None.
Literatur
I will provide notes/slides and links to online teaching material.
