Intended learning outcomes
PLEASE NOTE THAT STUDENTS ONLY NEED TO REGISTER TO EITHER COURSE A OR COURSE B.
This course takes place ONLINE only, and classes are live on Moodle every Monday from 10:00-11:00.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- write a formal academic paragraph
- confidently use complex sentences in their writing
- actively and accurately use a range of academic vocabulary and phrases in their writing
- cite and reference sources appropriately
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Online tasks, extensive self-study, written assignments and homework tasks.
Students are required to regularly read academic texts in English in order to develop their academic reading skills and awareness of academic vocabulary and register.
Course content
This course covers the following:
- paragraph and essay structure
- features of formal academic writing (including vocabulary and grammar)
- basic academic reading skills
- conducting a literature search
- scholarly practice: understanding and avoiding plagiarism
- citing and referencing (paraphrasing, summarising and quoting)
- introduction to online tools, such as corpora and the academic phrasebank
ATTENTION: after an initial diagnostic writing task, some students will be required to attend sessions at the Writing Centre in order to fulfil the requirements of this course .
