Intended learning outcomes

This course provides the necessary foundation students need to achieve the following learning goal (as defined in the curriculum):Students will be able to demonstrate the Business English skills required in today’s global economy.


Studierende sollen im reader-friendly informativen business English Schreibstil  einen kurzen Business-Plan verfassen können.

Studierende sollen auf Englisch eine Diskussion bzw. Arbeitssitzung effektiv moderieren können - einschließlich visueller Unterstützung der Inputs.

Studierende sollen kurze informationsorientierte geschäftliche Texte  in klarer, gut verständlicher  englischer Sprache verfassen können

Studierende sollen Einblicke in effektiver Verhandlunsführung gewinnen (Harvard Negotiation Project: Principled Negotiation) und in einfachen Verhandlungssituationen üben

Studierende sollen ihre praktischen Sprachfertigkeiten und einschlägiges Fachvokabular aufbauen. Als Zielrahmen wird die Cambridge English B2 Business Vantage internationale Sprachprüfung herangezogen. Insbesonders sollen sie Terminologie in Zusammenhang mit Firmengründungen (start-ups) und Firmenführung erwerben.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Kommunikativer Unterricht; Gruppenarbeit; Abhalten von Arbeitssitzungen; Trainieren vom  Verfassen von Berichten und einem Businessplan (process writing mit Feedbackschleife - Verfassen vom Businessplan in mehreren Schritten mit formativem Feedback)

Course content

Studierende arbeiten in Kleingruppen  und planen die Gründung eines Start-ups.  Ein Konzept wird ausgewählt und ausgearbeitet, Planungssitzungen werden abgehalten, ein gemeinsamer Businessplan wird verfasst. Moderations- und Verhandlungstechniken werden auf Englisch trainiert. Die dazugehrige Fachterminologie wird erarbeitet.

Intended learning outcomes

This course provides the necessary foundation students need to achieve the following learning goal (as defined in the curriculum):Students will be able to demonstrate the Business English skills required in today’s global economy.

Students work in teams  to decide on and plan a business start-up and draw up a business plan. They hold team meetings, train reader-friendly business writing (business plans), and build vocabulary resources related to business start-ups and running a business. 

Students are also introduced to the Principled Negotiation method from the Harvard Negotiation Project and do some basic negotiations training in English.

Target outcomes:

  • Students should be able to name and discuss key steps involved in planning a business start-up.
  • Students should be able to run team decision-making meetings using appropriate language to moderate  team interaction and discussion. They should be able to employ simple techniques for handling conflict in team discussions and  use appropriate visualisation to record and structure discussion inputs. They should be able to take part constructively in a meeting as a participant: LBS - listen, build, signal approach.
  • Students should become familiar with the basics of the Principled Negotiation method (developed by the Harvard Negotiation Project) and use these insights to handle simple negotiation scenarios.
  • Students should develop informative reader-friendly business writing skills: they should also be able to write a business plan section in a clear, informative, reader-friendly (business report)  style.
  • Students should train and be able to use the lexis for describing business start-ups and small-business management.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

  • Communicative methodology with a series of discussion tasks (group meetings) to plan a business start-up and coordinate the writing of a team business plan.
  • Peer and teacher feedback.
  • Group work: teams select a business concept, plan the start-up & draw up a business plan for the start-up concept.
  • Individual team meetings are held with teacher for individualized feedback.
  • Process approach to train writing (feedback loop).
  • Exercises to develop negotiation skills.
  • Online vocabulary training.

Writing a business plan

Running and moderating team meetings in English, being a constructive participant in meetings (techniques and relevant language)

Basics of Principled Negotiation (Harvard Method)

Vocabulary building - vocabulary related to setting up and running a small business, e.g foundations, articles of incorporation, finance, marketing, HR  (foundation vocabulary)

Prior knowledge expected

Regular students enrolled at AAU should have already completed English for Business Administration 1 = 554.01.................... / Students who have transferred from another university or are attending AAU as exchange/Erasmus students should have completed a foundation Business English course at their home institution or at the instution previously attended. 

High-school diploma level English skills are required (Matura level plus).

MEETINGS - Effektivität in der Kommunikation und Moderation bei business meetings:  Moderationstechniken, konstruktive Teilnahme, einfache Mittel zur Konfliktmoderation, visueller Unterstützung von Meeting-Inputs

BUSINESS PLAN - "reader-friendly business writing": klare, verständliche in den Grundzügen grammatikalisch richtige englische Sprache in der Verfassung eines 3-seitigen Businessplanabchnittes.  Kriterien:  geeignete  Wahl des Formats und klare Gliederung zur effektiven Präsentation von Informationen;  Strukturierheit der Absätze; Beherrschung der Satzgrammatik; fundierte Fachlexis.

B2 Business Vantage LISTENING & READING (Cambridge English)  Benotung nach vorgegebenem Schema.  Sinnerfassendes Lesen und Hören sowie Fachvokabular und allgemeine Sprachkompetenz werden überprüft und nach einem Standardschema benotet.     (Teile: Listening and Reading)    https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/business-vantage/exam-format/

If made necessary by restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the listening and reading tests can be held online. The meetings test can also be held online (BigBlueButton).

Meetings test:  business scenario simulation (25%); business plan section (30% of course points);  B2 Business Vantage (Cambridge English) Listening & Reading Sections (25%) ; course work, homework, self-study tasks (20%)
