Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

  • Students can name, describe and critically assess fundamental concepts in multilingualism.
  • Students can describe and discuss the sociolinguistics of different linguistic communities.
  • Students can follow and understand the recent scientific discourse in multilingualism.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course will consist of an introduction to the different topics in multilingualism. The course will be based on An introduction to multilingualism: language in a changing world by Florian Coulmas (Oxford University Press, 2018) and consist of weekly reading assignments according to the course plan that will be distributed in the first session of the seminar. The lectures will be supplemented by student presentations and subsequent discussion in class.
Students have to:
1) participate actively in the course;
2) participate in a presentation (assignedin the first session of the seminar);
3) hand in aportfolio consisting of summarized and commented articles. 

The language of instruction will be English, but other languages spoken by the students and listed above can be used. 

Course content

This course will provide an introduction to multilingualism. Fundamental concepts in multilingualism will be discussed: Bilingualism and multilingualism; Concepts and definitions of multilingualism; Diglossia and poliglossia;  Power, inequality and language; the Social setting of multilingualism (the polyglot individual); Multilingual international institutions; Multilingual (multiethinc) countries; Multilingualism in cyberspace; Research methods for investigating multilingualism.
