Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge about therelevance of women’s work (paid and unpaid) throughout history; motivation andencouragement of the participants to think of their own role on the labourmarket, as well as the women in their families; reflection on the currentsituation of women and their work in economy.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

watching and discussion ofthe documentation about Käthe Leichter, a pioneer of Austrian labour law, andanti-discrimination measures

Course content

The coursemainly deals with legal, historical, and sociological  developementsof working women. The starting point will be the legal situation in varioushistorical eras and context, and their impact on the performance of work bywomen and girls. On this basis, the current situation of women’s employment andlabour is being analyzed and discussed. The issue itself, thecircumstances of the cases, and the actual situation allow open discussion andcontroversy, in legal, economic and historical fields. Thus, due to the overalltopic, the participation of students of allbranches of study at the University of Klagenfurt is possible, and they arewelcome to contribute by bringing theknowledge of their fields. 

Main topics will be:

  • farmer, agricultural worker, prostitute and queen – only possible professions for women?
  • Rural exodus: factory worker and maiden are widening the range of allowed professions
  • the new group of white-collar workers: secretary and shop girls
  • (legal) reasons of (explicit) prohibition of women’s work
  • Paid and unpaid work of women throughout history
  • Relation of real property and working opportunities
  • Union movement and women’s work
  • Pioneers in their fields (first lawyer, physician, architect, CEO with…)
  • Have their always been housewives?
  • (First) specific work and health protection measures for women
  • Leading women – still not equal?
  • Everyday life problem: is the gender pay gap real?
