LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

In this class, students will obtain an overview of the basic economic theory on global division of labor via trade and also learn about the main streams of critique of these theories as well as alternative conceptualizations of international trade. Socio-ecological implications of the observed global division of labor will be assessed and the basic theory will be re-evaluated. Further aims are the development of skills in reading and discussion of scientific articles, performing literature searches, and presenting and critically discussing scientific arguments as well as in academic writing.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Reading of and answering of short questions about scientific articles, in-class discussions about different socio-ecological aspects of the global division of labor, presentations in small groups (2 students), writing of a short text on one topic discussed.

Inhalt/e

What determines the role which countries play in the global economy? Why did some countries become “global sweatshops” and others “hi-tech powerhouses”? Does it make ‘sense’ for countries to export the staple food of an undernourished population? In this class, we will discuss the basic economic theory on global division of labor via trade and also the main streams of critique of these theories as well as alternative conceptualizations of international trade. We will then assess the socio-ecological implications of the observed global division of labor and will re-evaluate the basic theory.
